Reflective Journal 1
Entry 1: I See, I Think & I Wonder
When I hear the words social studies, there are quite a few things that come to mind. Dates, presidents, wars, battle, and treaties are just a couple of the things that popped into my head. As usual, I am sure that you have certain words or phrases that come to mind when you think of the words social studies. For this journal entry I decided to choose three articles tilted, What is Social Studies, Curriculum Standards, and Deep and Fragile Knowledge.
Entry 2: I See,I Think & I Wonder
As I read each article, I notice a few things that caught my attention. The first article, What is Social Studies, I noticed that social studies are more than just history or geography. It is multidisciplinary and consists of humanities, political science, geography, sociology, psychology and much more. While reading the second article, I notice that social studies are one of the core necessities a student needs in order to gain knowledge and skill as a civic citizen. However, the national curriculum standards did not acknowledge social studies as a vital standard until later. The last article I read talked about how when teaching, teachers have to be aware of their students have fragile knowledge, which means that students do not retain or understand the information, or a deep understanding of what they are learning.
Entry 3: I See, I Think & I Wonder
After reading these articles and gaining additional insight, I still have questions. As I continue in my second semester of student teaching and am actually hands-on with students and teaching, I still am not sure why social studies is not addressed like it should be. Many classrooms that I've observed, have either pushed social studies to the back burner or not address it at all. Since learning that social studies is a crucial subject that prepare our students for their future, I feel that just because it is not tested in the primary grade levels, it still should represented just as any other core subject.
